Veteran actor Michael Douglas has taken the brave step of publicly revealing that the erectile dysfunction drug plays an important role in keeping his marriage to younger wife Catherine Zita Jones alive.
Speaking to the magazine of the American Association of Retired Persons, he said, “Some wonderful enhancements have happened in the last few years – Viagra, Cialis – that can make us all feel younger…At least in your head, your fire burns as brightly.”
Douglas is 25 years older than his wife and admitted that he uses the blue pills to keep his marriage vibrant, along with regular visits to the gym to stay healthy. The star, soon to be seen in Wall Street 2: , was once famed for his voracious sexual appetite, receiving treatment for sex addication in the 1990s, before his marriage in 2000 to the Welsh star.
Celeb watchers originally were very sceptical about the marriage, not least because of the considerable age difference between the couple. However the actors have confounded critics, appearing to have one of the strongest and longest-lasting marriages in Hollywood.
Since it was first tested 16 years ago, Viagra revolutionised the sex lives of older men around the world. Erectile dysfunction is a condition that tends to come on with age and it is estimated to afflict at least 10% of men at some point in their lives.
While celebrities are usually fairly reluctant to admit that they need the extra help of a drug like Viagra or Cialis, it has been mentioned in a series of celebrity divorce cases, included that of comedian Vic Reeves and Independent incoming editor Rod Liddle.
It has also been suggested that Sir Paul McCartney and Jerry Springer, the talk show host, also use the medication.
The star’s statement will without doubt go some way to removing the stigma that is still attached to men of a certain age who find themselves needing medical help to achieve an erection. Unfortunately, many men feel deeply embarrassed to visit their doctor about the problem, leading to a massive boom in the sales of counterfeit medication on the internet.
Men believe they are buying genuine Viagra, unaware that genuine Viagra can only be sold with a doctor’s prescription, and end up taking counterfeit versions which puts their health at risk.
Douglas also admitted in the interview that age had made him a much better father. He said about bringing up his eldest son, Cameron, currently facing a long jail term for drugs offences, “I’ll assume whatever responsibilities I have to. Would it have been better to have been around more? Absolutely.” He added that he thought his parenting skills improved when he had his younger children.
