PHA Media head Health PR Campaign which could save the NHS Billions

by admin on February 11, 2010

As the nation’s obesity crisis escalates, overweight patients should be advised to undergo routine gastric band operations to help save the NHS millions of pounds says a prominent British Bariatric surgeon.

Recent estimates show that 10 per cent of NHS spending – £9 billion a year – goes on diabetes, strokes, kidney failure and other diseases caused by obesity and diabetes. All of which could be significantly reduced by bariatric surgery.

The over-stretched health service has already proved unable to cope with demand from Britain’s obese and thousands remain on a waiting list or are choosing to spend money to be treated privately.

An extremely effective media relations programme and health PR campaign was launched in Australia who now treat over 16,000 people a year. The UK should look at the success on this campaign and consider how leading specialists can work towards meeting more effective and ultimately cost cutting objectives.

Leading bariatric surgeons are arguing that the gastric band surgery leads diabetic and other patients suffering from weight-related illnesses into remission – meaning it is a cheaper option in the long run for the health service.
Through strong reputation management and PR consultancy bariatric surgery has become a well recognized treatment helping to alleviate obesity problems. The number of gastric band procedures rising by over 70% in a five year period between 2004-2009.

While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, private clinics have proved the demand heavily outweighs the current NHS activity.

2010 will see the launch of health PR campaign, directed by PHA Media to highlight the huge savings the NHS could make over a 10 year period by offering further access to surgery on the NHS.
